I. The wedding

Two worlds at one table

Sophie and Gordon live in New York; the drawl in the toasts came from Texas. They wanted their two worlds seated at one table, in a place that would ask nothing of their guests but presence. We proposed Castiglion del Bosco, A Rosewood Hotel, a borgo, a church and five thousand acres of the Val d'Orcia held by a single estate, and built four days around it.

Their guests flew in from four continents. Most had never been to this corner of Tuscany; none had to think about it. Every transfer, room, menu and place card was held by the house.

II. The production

Eighteen months, rehearsed

Eighteen months of full wedding planning, then the production itself, from the day the team arrived on site to the day it left. The estate's calendar was secured before the season opened; the artisans, florists, calligraphers, the string ensemble, the pyrotechnician for one quiet minute of light over the valley, were commissioned by name. Two weather plans existed for every outdoor hour. None were needed; all were rehearsed.
